Owning a Home

Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough CountyFlorida, Inc., (HFHHC), is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, whose mission is to provide decent, affordable housing for people in need.

These homes are provided at NO PROFIT, with ZERO INTEREST to those families who could not otherwise afford to purchase their own home and who meet Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County's requirements.

ALL applicants will be considered. Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County does not discriminate based upon race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

Qualifying for A Habitat Home
To be considered for a Habitat Home, the following must apply to the applicant:

  • Must demonstrate a need for adequate shelter and must be currently living in substandard housing 
  • Must show an ability to pay an Interest Free Mortgage. Monthly mortgage payments amount to roughly $350.00 to $550.00 and down payment of $1,500
  • Must display a willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County
  • Must fall in the minimum and maximum income guidelines in order to qualify for a home. Please click the link to your lower right to view the income guidelines.

The Application Process
The following information will be required as part of the application process:

  1. Past month's pay stubs for all wage earners in the household.
  2. Proof of unearned income (i.e. SSI, SSA, AFDC, VA benefits, etc.).
  3. Proof of court ordered income (i.e. Child Support, Alimony, etc.).
  4. If you are married, you must apply with your spouse. If divorced, a copy of the legal documentation is required.
  5. Residency in Hillsborough County, Florida for at least 12 months must be verified for consideration.
  6. All applicants must be United States citizens or have a Permanent Resident Alien Card.
  7. A listing of your current debts and obligations. This includes car payments, credit cards, cellular phones, furniture accounts, and other monthly bills.
  8. All liens and judgements must be taken care of prior to applying for the program.

The debt-to-income ratio must be less than 45 % of your gross monthly income.  Families with numerous collection accounts will be referred to non-profit debt consolidation program.

You MUST wait a minimum of 24 months to apply if you have had a bankruptcy or a foreclosure.

Procedure Summary

  1. Attend Pre-Screening Application Meeting.
  2. Verification of Income and Credit.
  3. Home interview by a Habitat Family Selection Committee member.
  4. Volunteer at the Habitat work site for the “Good Faith Hours”.
  5. Complete Application and other documentation needed to complete file.
  6. Recommendation by the Family Selection Committee and approval by Habitat's Board of Directors.
  7. Placed on the waiting list.
  8. Begin working on "Sweat Equity" hours and site selection.
  9. Have the Wall Raising and start building your Habitat home.
  10. Complete the 500 “Sweat Equity” hours and pay $1,500 down-payment.
  11. Dedicating, closing, and moving into your home.
  12. Make timely, monthly mortgage payments over the life of the mortgage.

From start to finish, the selection/home ownership process takes approximately two (2) years to be completed.
